Special feature: Thumpers

In the 1950's, British Railways started replacing steam with diesel and electric trains. The four regions of BR had considerable autonomy and often chose very different designs of trains. Whereas most regions ordered Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) for local services, Southern Region ordered Diesel-Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs).
